In severe cases, the ridge has been reabsorbed and is too narrow for an implant.  At surgery the bone is expanded and the bone graft is placed between the expanded bone to widen the ridge of bone.  The bone graft heals for several months before placing the implant. In some cases the implants are placed when the ridge expansion is performed.

Drs. Blecha and Jandali will review these aspects of this type of graft with you:

  • The nature of the bone graft
  • Whether the implant can be placed when the graft is placed or whether the graft has to heal first and then the implant will be placed separately.
  • Alternative treatment
  • Possible complications
  • Patient recovery
